Ancient Chinese philosopher Laozi coined the phrase; ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.’ We’ve modified it slightly so that it now reads; a journey of about 15,000 kilometres begins with choosing which car to take.
We’re currently in discussions with a client who is considering tackling the Sydney to London Classic Marathon Rally in 2014, the choice of car is currently the hot topic but it isn’t as simple as you may think.
To put things into perspective, an average national rally in the UK consists of around 70 kilometres of special stages. The Sydney to London Classic Marathon Rally will challenge crews to complete around 100 kilometres of special stages per day in addition to covering hundreds of kilometres on the road sections between each stage.
Imagine driving your rally car to a national rally, doing the rally then driving home. Every day. For a month. That’s how strong, and comfortable, the car needs to be.
It is an inspiring adventure and a challenge that is rarely seen in modern rallying but one we feel Ramsport is perfectly placed to be involved in. Our results, and trophy cabinet, prove that our FIA historic rally car preparation, modern WRC rally car preparation and logistical support is world class and produces cars that can reliably tackle thousands of kilometres of special stages.
As an example, in addition to many thousands of kilometres of testing, we contested 73 rallies with one driver, who used a variety of Ramsport prepared contemporary Group N and World Rally Cars on tarmac, snow and gravel. Over the course of three years we won many rallies and even set a fastest stage time on a World Rally Championship rally at WRC Rally Germany yet we only suffered three retirements due to mechanical failure.
The details and route of the Sydney to London Classic Marathon Rally are still being discussed but it is thought that the outline schedule will look something like this:
Legs 1 & 2 – Australia
5500kms plus approximately 100kms of stages each day.
Rest day in Adelaide then an airlift out of Perth at end of leg two.
12 days in total.
Legs 3 & 4 – Europe
6000kms plus approximately 100kms of stages each day.
Rest day in Rijeka (Croatia) then leg four to the finish in the UK.
18 days in total.
We’ll try our best to keep you updated on the progress of this exciting project. If you are considering entering this event and wish to discuss anything, from the choice of car to a full arrive and drive package, then please give us a call on +44 (0) 1824 707 038 or email us.

We’re off to Lydden Hill Circuit in Kent this weekend (26th / 27th August) for round six of the eight round Suzuki Swift Rallycross Championship.

With such a long gap between meetings it is vital that the drivers are comfortable in their cars from the very start of the event. With this in mind we arranged for drivers Matthew and Oliver Thomas to shakedown their cars prior to the event. We then made the final preparations before loading the cars into the trailers and heading off on the monster 600 mile round trip from our workshop to Lydden Hill Circuit in South-East England.

The young brothers from North Wales have impressed in their debut season in the series with 15 year old Matthew currently in a very strong position in the Junior championship standings, and with a very good chance of winning the Junior title, following a string of podium finishes at previous meetings.

The Lydden Hill meeting will be only the second time that Oliver has driven competitively in the series. His debut outing was spectacular; he rolled the car in the last race of the day which meant that the Ramsport team spent the evening rebuilding the car ready for the first race the next morning. Oliver went on to finish fifth in the second final of the meeting, having led one of the races.

A full report on the event will be posted on www.ramsport.com following the event.

We are always happy to discuss the Swift Rallycross Championship with any drivers who are interested in competing. We currently have two cars for sale, one Junior specification Swift and one Senior specification Swift, which are eligible for the series. We offer a full arrive and drive package with on event support and hospitality as required. Please email us for further details .

You may remember that Phill went on what was essentially a day trip to New Zealand back at the start of 2012. He battled jet lag and deep vein thrombosis’ and did a deal on an MG Metro 6R4, one of the most iconic Group B rally cars.

Phill flew back to the UK and the Metro was loaded into a container before spending a number of weeks bobbing its way around the world’s oceans; finally landing in the UK where it was unloaded, collected and transported to our workshop.

Not much is known about the history of the car but it is an international spec’ car that has recently spent time competing in hill climbs and sprints in New Zealand and Australia.

If you know any further details about this particular example of the MG Metro 6R4 we would love to hear from you so that we can start to build up a picture of where it has been and what it has done during its life.

We’ll be re-preparing the Metro for a customer of ours who intends to continue to use it on sprint events. The car is currently in right hand drive specification so we will be sourcing the necessary parts and carrying out a conversion to make it left hand drive.

We’ll try our best to keep you updated with a build diary and a gallery of Metro 6R4 photos as things progress and maybe even some video of the glorious V6 engine barking into life.

We’ll also be posting photos and updates on the Ramsport Facebook page and on the Ramsport Twitter page.

The Swift Rally Cross Championship is a close fought contest in both the junior and senior categories and the heats are always action packed as the video below illustrates. We’ve already had considerable success in our maiden season in this championship, running cars for a number of junior and senior drivers.

When fellow competitor Johny Bean rolled his Suzuki Swift at the Nutts Corner meeting Ramsport didn’t hesitate to offer any support we could to the driver and his team in order to help him get his car repaired in time for the next heat.

Our decades of experience in scavenging parts and repairing rally cars in muddy forests and remote service parks came to the fore. Even though there was considerable damage to the Suzuki Swift Johny Bean was back out for his next heat in a car that showed little sign of the damage inflicted during his earlier roll.
Check out the video below to see just how nice we are!

The Ford Escort is possibly the most iconic rally car of all time. It started with the Ford Escort Mk1 back when everything was black and white. The Mk1 evolved into the Mk2 and then the layout changed to front-wheel drive before Ford saw sense and developed a four-wheel drive fire breathing World Rally Car version of the Ford Escort.

As a preparation company we have been lucky enough to have built and maintained Escorts from every era and for customers all over the world. Ramsport’s reputation for knowing a thing or two about cars from the blue oval led us recently to being asked to build a Ford Escort Mk1 RS1600 to full FIA historic rally specification. Luckily for you we kept a diary of the build and took plenty of photographs during the construction.
